Recreation Field from Front Street
Recreation Field from Front Street
The roadside is lined with 15 copper beech trees planted as a Second World War memorial (the plaque can be seen to the left). There is one tree for each man who died. The recreation field, also known as Fenwick Fields, contains sports pitches, bowling green, children's playground and the St Anne's Community Centre (opened in 2005). Two fields were gifted to the people of Wolsingham by Featherstone Fenwick in 1911 and this has now been extended south to the riverbank.
Wolsingham
Wolsingham is a small market town in County Durham situated where the Waskerley Beck joins the River Wear. It styles itself as the 'Gateway to Weardale'. It is an interesting and friendly place, bustling with life, but with many old and interesting buildings. It now serves a predominantly agricultural community but once had a thriving and important steel works.

My descriptions have been aided by the local book: Wolsingham: Gateway to Weardale by Elaine Ridley, Margaret Shepheard and Vivien Welsh (ISBN 0 953074 97 B)
