A symbolic gravestone in Borgue Parish Churchyard
This poignant stone is for the McKissock children who died in 1763 aged 6 years, 4 years and 5 months respectively. The three children are shown linking arms with the eldest child on the left standing on a coffin and the 4 year old standing on a skull. The infant in the middle is also standing on a symbolic object that I am unable to make out. Other symbols of mortality are in the form of a winged hourglass and crossed femur bones. A winged soul, a symbol of immortality, is at the head of the stone. The inscription reads:-
Here lyes the corpse of David McKissock,
who died Jan’y 9th 1763, aged 6 y’r
Also the corpse of John McKissock, who
died Jan’y 21st 1763, aged 4 years. And
Samuel McKissock, who died March 21st
1763, aged 5 months.
Children to Alex McKissock, tenant in
Laigh Borgue and Mary Middleton, spouses.
An inscription on the other side of the stone reads:-
Here lies the corpse of Alexander Kissock
who died Feb’y 10th 1773, aged 46 years.
Also here lies Katharine Kissock, his daughter,
who died Sept 6th 1770, aged 3 months.
Full inscription details were obtained from the Kirkyards website.
