St Thomas of Canterbury Church, Wolsingham
St Thomas of Canterbury Church, Wolsingham
The Roman Catholic church was re-established in Wolsingham in 1849 under the ministry of Father Thomas Wilkinson. The church was built in 1853 and dedicated to St Thomas of Canterbury by the Bishop of Hexham. People attended from all over the dale and the numbers grew when the Wolsingham steelworks opened. It remains the only Catholic Church in Weardale. A school was built nearby and in 1892 St Anne's Convent and girls boarding school was established NZ0737 : Converted building of St Anne's Convent, Angate Street
Wolsingham
Wolsingham is a small market town in County Durham situated where the Waskerley Beck joins the River Wear. It styles itself as the 'Gateway to Weardale'. It is an interesting and friendly place, bustling with life, but with many old and interesting buildings. It now serves a predominantly agricultural community but once had a thriving and important steel works.

My descriptions have been aided by the local book: Wolsingham: Gateway to Weardale by Elaine Ridley, Margaret Shepheard and Vivien Welsh (ISBN 0 953074 97 B)
