Former grounds of Mercote Hall
Former grounds of Mercote Hall
The Irish yews, cypresses and sequoias reveal that this small parcel of woodland south-southwest of modern Mercote Mill Farm is the site of the ornamental grounds of Mercote Hall. Judging by old maps, Mercote Hall was a country house, possibly an old manor house, at approximately SP224801. It appears on OS maps of 1887 and 1904 but only one range of buildings is present from OS 1937 up to 1986. A local resident believed the site had been used to hold prisoners of war, but did not know which war. There is nothing on the site now. Mercote Hall was sometime part of the Berkswell Hall estate and was demolished by the Berkswell estate.

Update, April 2013
I'm grateful to a correspondent, Graham Mark, for the following: "I can confirm that Mercote Hall was used for PoWs in WWI. I have three letters from an infantry private Martin Fries: one from Dorchester (Dorset) 3 Feb 1918: one from Mercote Hall 8 Feb 18: third from hospital in Birmingham 20 Nov 18 where he had been admitted on 18th with influenza. All three are addressed to Struth in Bavaria. I have not yet translated the first two letters as they are in the old German 'handschrift' but the letter from the hospital was written for him and his signature is very weak.
The Dorchester camp supervised a large number of labour camps as far north as Birmingham. I have no knowledge of the nature of the work PoWs at Mercote were doing. The War Office records list the camp as Berkswell."
