Site of a pool, grounds of Mercote Hall
This small parcel of woodland south-southwest of modern Mercote Mill Farm was once the grounds of Mercote Hall. Judging by old maps, Mercote Hall was a country house, possibly an old manor house, at approximately SP224801. It appears on OS maps of 1887 and 1904 but only one range of buildings is present from OS 1937 up to 1986. This pool was formed on the course of a brook which continued north to the former Mercote Mill. That land has been restored following sand and gravel quarrying; the brook is nowhere to be seen. A local resident believed the Hall site had been used to hold prisoners of war, but did not know which war. There is nothing on the site now. Mercote Hall was sometime part of the Berkswell Hall estate and was demolished by the Berkswell estate.
