Very little of this grid square is dry land - just this south-east corner. On the left, the seawall runs NNE towards Emsworth, with a delph (borrow-dyke) running parallel to it on the landward side. In the middle of the picture a minor arm of Great Deep stretches NE towards Little Deep (with which it probably once connected). Great Deep, the channel which separates Thorney from the mainland, runs ESE, out of frame to the right.

Not far behind the camera lies the Ministry of Defence's checkpoint, controlling pedestrian access to Thorney Island.

Rain had cleared this coastal strip a couple of hours earlier, but was still falling on the South Downs, visible in the distance.
