The New Lamp (2) - sign, 12 Bankbottom, Hadfield
The sign appears to be a miner's lamp. According to the 1835 trade directory published by Pigot, coal was mined about three miles from Glossop. As Hadfield is very near there, maybe there were mines near here, and the pub derived its name from them. Certainly coal mining was a very strenuous job, and miners were renowned for drinking many pints of beer after a hard day's work.
