A259 heads towards Old Romney
As its name suggests Old Romney was the original settlement and its 'New' namesake was its port on the channel coast. Old Romney, meaning 'ram's island' was indeed situated on an island in the estuary of the River Rother. As the coastline extended east the marsh was gradually reclaimed so that this area of flat farmland now separates the two Romneys.
