City Tower, London Wall
City Tower, London Wall
By Sir John Burnet, Tait & Partners, 1962-64. GMW Partnership's (admittedly successful) recladding in reflective blue glass in 1985 may have largely removed the taint of the 1960s, thereby saving it from the fate of many of its contemporaries (for example: TQ3281 : St Alphage House, London Wall (1)).
It was built as part of the development plan drawn up the City of London and London County Council in 1954-55. West of Moorgate, London Wall would be lined with six office towers, perpendicular to the street, and walkways would run alongside and, via a bridge, link to the Barbican Estate. The segregation of traffic and pedestrians didn't really work, and things never stay still in the City for long. A combination of the low regard with which 1960s architecture is currently held and intense pressure on land has resulted in three of the towers having already been demolished, and St Alphage waiting on death row.
