SU3278 : Estbury (Isbury) Almshouses, Lambourn, BerkshireEstbury AlmshousesThe almshouses were endowed by John Estbury (or Isbury) in 1502 for ten poor men, and rebuilt in 1852 at the expense of Henry Hippisley, the architect being Thomas Talbot Bury, a colleague of A.W.N. Pugin. The building is listed Grade II (entry no 1136331): "A picturesque, unsymmetrical tower forms the entrance, three storeys, diaper brickwork battlemented parapet. Stone mullioned windows and arched entrance with stone band over, with inscription." Pevsner and his revisers commented that the grandeur of the design suggests the gatehouse to a bishop's palace.
