Joseph May memorial - St Mary's church, Hale (3)
When Henry Archer died without an heir the next owner of Hale Park estate was Joseph May, a wine merchant engaged in the importation of wine from Portugal. Both Joseph and his mother Margaret died within a few weeks of each other in 1796. She is commemorated on the urn above, below which on the base is a more fulsome inscription to her son Joseph. The memorial in the south transept with its exquisitely carved rams heads on the corners of the base was designed by James Wyatt, and carved by Sir Richard Westmacott LinkExternal link .
