Pembroke Castle
The first Pembroke Castle was built in 1093. It was a fairly simple castle but, at the end of the 12th century the Earl of Pembroke transformed the earth and timber structure into a powerful stone fortification.
At the end of the Civil War, Cromwell ordered the castle to be destroyed and the townspeople were encouraged to disassemble the fortress and re-use its stone for their own purposes. The castle was then abandoned and allowed to decay, remaining an ivy-covered ruin until it was restored in the twentieth century.
The castle is the largest privately-owned castle in Wales and is open to the public. In 1989, Pembroke Castle was used as King Miraz's castle in the BBC’s adaptation of Prince Caspian, one of CS Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia.
