SN8587 : Boardwalk beside the River Severn
3 km from Geufron, Powys, Great Britain

Boardwalk beside the River Severn
Here the River Severn (Afon Hafren) is less than 5 kilometres from its source high on Plynlimon. This mountain is a good source of rivers: as well as the Severn, it also gives rise to the River Wye (Afon Gwy) and the (much shorter) Afon Rheidol which flows west to Aberystwyth. The Wye rejoins the Severn near Chepstow when it flows into the Severn estuary.
Interestingly the Wye Valley Walk follows the Severn for its first kilometre or so! No doubt it was considered sensible to start at a spot accessible by road (the Hafren Forest picnic site at Rhyd-y-benwch) rather than high on a mountain.
