NT1970 : Demolition of Sighthill Tower Blocks [7]
taken 13 years ago, near to Corstorphine, Edinburgh, Scotland
Three multistorey 1960s tower blocks, by the Calder Road in Edinburgh, unoccupied for sometime, and demolished in September 2011. A series of photos from before and after the event. A large crowd gathered to watch the event on a sunny Sunday morning. The only downside was the wind, blowing from the demolition area towards the crowd, who were enveloped in a thick cloud of dust and fine debris. The 285 flats will be replaced by 320 new homes, for sale and rent, and half will be affordable [not sure about the other half?].
Update: October 2018. New building began in late 2017/2018 - it appears to be high density, close up to the south and east bounding roads. It is a £35 million Council-led regeneration project, in partnership with Keepmoat Regeneration, to provide mixed tenure affordable housing on land previously occupied by outdated poor quality high rise housing. Funded through the Council’s housebuilding programme supported by £2.88m Scottish Government funding, it will comprise 316 energy-efficient homes, including 96 affordable homes for social rent, 88 affordable homes for mid-market rent and 132 flats and family homes for sale.
