The Paisley Society was established, following the pattern laid down by the pioneering Rochdale Society, in 1860. Their first shop was in Storie Street and was stocked with oatmeal, butter, cheese, flour and other provisions. After early reverses in fortune, the Society went from strength to strength, opening new departments and premises in several parts of the town. The culmination came in 1910 when, at the time of their golden jubilee, they opened this magnificent building as their new central premises.
