Interior of the hillfort at Bury Hill, Upper Clatford
Looking north at the interior of the hillfort, which has an area of about 22 acres. The interior is private land - in fact a helpful sign says BULL KEEP DOG OUT. A public footpath encircles the interior on top of the inner rampart, which is mostly planted with beech trees. The hillfort is iron-age in origin, but occupation was continued
into the Roman era. Apparently it was also used as a camp by King Canute in 1016, when he fought Edmund Ironside in the Battle of Andover.
