In 1889, he joined the Bombay offices of Mackinnon, Mackenzie and Co., who were shipping agents. He became a director of Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O), and was also involved in many other companies, including Gray, Dawes and Co., and the Chartered Bank of India.
He died on June 22, 1923, in London, leaving over a quarter of a million pounds, from which £25,000 was bequeathed to the Mariners' Asylum (NS2677 : Sir Gabriel Wood's Mariners' Home), and an equal amount to the Scottish Orphan Homes at Bridge of Weir. He also left £5000 to the Children's Convalescent Home at Greenock. [Details from contemporary newspaper reports.]
Other members of the family are listed on the memorial, including: Mary Carmichael (1872-1956, born in Greenock), Margaret Smart (1877-1959, born in Greenock), and Duncan Smart Carmichael (1915-1984, born in India); possibly the sister, wife, and son, respectively, of Sir Duncan.
