The South Bank Lion
The South Bank Lion stands on the southern end of Westminster Bridge beside the former GLC (Greater London Council) building. The lion is made from Coade stone, a manufacturing technique now lost but originally mastered by Eleanor Coade. Originally the lion was painted red and was above the entrance to the Red Lion Brewery which was demolished to make was for the Festival of Britain site in 1951. The lion was rescued at the order of George VI and placed in its present position in 1966.
