HMS Belfast - forward engine room
HMS Belfast - forward engine room
This is part of one of the four 20,000 horsepower steam turbines that drove HMS Belfast. This is the port forward engine driving the port outer screw and I am looking aft. The grey box just left of all the gauges on the right is the gearbox and clutch arrangement for the cruising turbine. The cruising turbine itself is hidden behind all the gauges. The big white pipe on the top edge leads to the high-pressure turbine in the centre background. The large lump on the left is the forward end of the combined low-pressure turbine with the astern turbine arranged at its forward end.

This is (unless the space has been closed) one of the few places in the UK where one can get up close and personal to big marine turbines.

This was a very quick visit before boarding a boat to take our party on board the Royal Yacht Britannia for a tour of live machinery spaces - TQ3380 : HMY Britannia in the Pool of London for the very last time, 11/97.
