Waiting for Vermeer's Women
Waiting for Vermeer's Women
A small and well-behaved queue of silver-haired Cambridge people formed outside the Fitzwilliam Museum, waiting for the exhibition of paintings of women from the Dutch golden age to open for the first time at ten o'clock on a Wednesday morning in October. The four Vermeers (including "The Lacemaker", shown on the poster above the gate) were the obvious draw, but there were also delights by de Hooch, Dou and others.
