Carved pediment
Carved pediment
This piece of carved stonework, also shown in NT0077 : Dated stone (1676) in wall of Cross House, has been incorporated into a modern building that stands beside a NT0077 : Road to the Vennel Car Park; see the latter photograph for context.

The stone is dated 1675 (the worn '5' looks a little like a '6'), and, as explained in the Linlithgow Heritage Trail leaflet, it came from a building called the Golden Cross, which used to stand in this area, but which was demolished in the 1960s: see LinkExternal link (at Canmore).

The object at the lower left is one that appears on various sites on the Heritage Trail; it bears the town motto: "St Michael is kinde to strangers", on which, see NS9977 : Linlithgow.
