Longpond footbridge
Taken from the bridge which links Belhus Woods Country Park with Oakwood & Ash Plantation. It is named after Capability Brown's Long Pond, which has been bisected by the M25.
Oakwood & Ash Plantation
The Oakwood and Ash Plantation is part of the Thames Chase Community Forest. These two adjoining woodlands are separated by a stretch of water called the Long Pond.
Oakwood was designed in the 18th century by landscape gardener, Lancelot "Capability" Brown as part of the landscape of Belhus house.
The Long Pond is now bisected by the M25, and the western section is now in Belhus Woods Country Park.
The plantation is joined to the country park by a footbridge TQ5781 : Longpond footbridge.
Belhus Woods Country Park
Sections of Belhus Woods Country Park park were originally part of the Belhus Estate, the grounds of which were designed by Capability Brown; some remnants of which can still be seen.
As well as the areas of grassland and woodland, past gravel extraction on the site has created a series of lakes and clay extraction has created a number of small ponds.
The park includes land owned by Thurrock Council and Essex County Council and is managed by Essex County Council Ranger Service.
It is situated within Thames Chase Community Forest and borders woodland owned by the Woodland Trust and Forestry Commission.
It is linked to the Oakwood and Ash Plantation by a footbridge TQ5781 : Longpond footbridge.
