"THO. PITT. ESQr BENEFACTOR"

In the early 18th century Thomas Pitt paid for extensive renovations to the Church, including having the tower added. Grandfather and great-grandfather of the Prime Ministers William Pitt the Elder and William Pitt the Younger, Thomas Pitt was born in nearby Blandford Forum in 1653. A successful merchant, he did a lot of trade with India and was appointed Governor of Fort St. George, Madras by the British East India Company. Known as 'Diamond' Pitt due to his purchasing a huge uncut diamond, he went on to sell the cut diamond to the regent Philippe II, Duke of Orléans where it became part of the French Crown Jewels. This profit allowed Pitt to invest in a lot of property, including Mawarden Court (see SU1332 : Mawarden Court by Trish Steel) at Stratford Sub Castle.
