Remains of the Roman Wall, Dorchester
Remains of the Roman Wall, Dorchester
The west Dorset town of Dorchester has an ancient and illustrious history pre-dating the arrival of the Romans in AD43. They named the settlement Durnovaria. There are still a few signs left of Roman times of which this fragment of the town wall is one. In the period following the abandonment of Britain by the Romans most of their relics were plundered for use as building materials. This section survived and was given to the town by Lucia Catharine Stone in 1886. The wall is protected by a metal fence, occasionally confused by push-bike riders, evidently of the feminine persuasion, with a bike shed. Bless.
