The holm of the Vere on the right is much closer. According to AIS GPS data the ship is moored due west of Hagdales Ness, about 5 km distant, whereas the Vere is only about 1.5 km from this point.

The Stena Carron is operated by Stena Drilling, a UK company based in Aberdeen. The vessel was built in South Korea and launched in 2008. It is a specialist deepwater drilling rig capable of operating in water of a depth of up to 10,000 feet (3000 m). Its role in deepwater oil exploration has led to some controversy. The vessel was the subject of several spoiling campaigns by Greenpeace in Shetland waters in September 2010, immediately following the Gulf of Mexico spill, as campaigners sought to highlight the potential perils of deepwater rigs. Just visible on the right is an attendant safety standby vessel, Vos Endurance, a British-flagged vessel operated by the Netherlands company Vroon.
