Heage Windmill
A view of the mill on a breezy day, you can see the shutters are mostly open to prevent a 'sand castle type mill'. To the left of the window was sited a fire to keep the mill warm, this couldn't be used when milling though as flour dust is explosive.
Heage Windmill
Heage mill is Derbyshire's only working windmill, the county is more famous for its water and steam mills. The tower mill was built by local stone masons in 1797 and worked until 1919. The county council bought the rotten shell in the 1970s and the friends restored the building. It opened as an attraction in 2002. Inside is one working pair of stones with a red governor controlling the flour quality. Guides take visitors around the mill explaining all aspects of milling.
