Leawood Pump
This is the valve gear on the 1849 built single cylinder, non-rotative beam pumping engine. Although described by some as a Cornish engine it is much more akin to the operating cycle of the earlier Watt engine. The drive has to operate the two handles by hand to start the engine and must continue to do so until it is operating at full stroke, when it becomes self-acting. However, it is not self-adjusting so the driver is always nearby to make rapid adjustments or check the engine by hand. The site was very busy with visitors and I gave up trying to take tripod mounted shots after I had successfully bagged this view.
