Public Footpath Sign, near Hope Cross
Public Footpath Sign, near Hope Cross
The sign is dated 1905 and erected by The Peak District and Northern Counties Footpaths Preservation Society (PD & NCFPS) a society formed in 1894 to preserve the ancient footpaths and of course predated the Mass Trespass movement of 1932. Even with the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act of 1949, which established the Public Rights of Way we know so well today the society continues to protect rights of way in the Peak District and counties surrounding Manchester see LinkExternal link
