Chemical works near Immingham (6)
An impressive spectacle, with its array of pipes, chimneys, sheds, and plumes of smoke. This plant is operated by Cristal Inorganic Chemicals, specialists in the production of titanium dioxide, used as a whitening pigment in, amongst other things, coatings, plastics, inks, cosmetics and food.
When I look at such complex and intricate structures as this, I find it hard to believe that they have been built without a thought to impressing observers.
A nearby sign warned the public of the risk of hazardous fumes, and instructed them to leave the area immediately in the event of a wailing siren and flashing orange lights. That didn't happen while I was there, but I noticed a slightly acrid edge to the atmosphere.
