Lunna House
Lunna House
Home of the Hunter family for many generations, their HU4868 : Hunter's Monument is visible from this house. The house dates from the C17th and C18th, being started in 1663 by Robert Hunter, the first Lord Chamberlain of Shetland.
In WW2 Lunna House was the original headquarters and accommodation for the crews of the "Shetland Bus" - and for their leader David Armine Howarth. This was an heroic service shuttling between the Shetland Isles and occupied Norway, ferrying spies and rescuing those in particular danger. See LinkExternal link
The boats for the missions were moored in West Lunna Voe, a harbour with a stone pier and a house that was used as a workshop. Later for operational reasons the HQ was moved to Scalloway on the other side of the island.
