Mid Strath Nethy
Mid Strath Nethy
Strath Nethy has a whole collection of features of interest to the geomorphologist. Apart from the meltwater channel just visible top R (not this grid sq) and the extensive moraines, some of which are very blocky (centre left), there appears to be a rampart-like feature all round the slope opposite. This could have formed when rocks fell across long-lying snow-beds and piled up at the foot of the slope. This would not survive if the valley was subsequently glaciated, so must be a recent feature, possibly only from the Loch Lomond stadial, 10,000 years ago. The weathered granite in the foreground is evidence of the way our 'hardest' rock can go to pieces once chemical weathering unpicks the bonds that hold it together.
