HU4148 : Dam at the Loch of Hamarsland

near to Laxfirth, Shetland Islands, Great Britain

Dam at the Loch of Hamarsland
Dam at the Loch of Hamarsland
This dam does not appear on the OS maps, despite being the largest of its kind I've seen in Shetland. This intact section is about 6 feet tall. Out of shot to the right, the waters have found a way through and drained the loch. The ground with the lighter coloured vegetation immediately behind the dam would have been underwater with this dam raising the loch level and more than doubling its area. I didn't see any signs of mills on the outflow burn so can't explain what this sizeable construction would have been for.
