This memorial is to a 5 year old boy who died near this spot in August 1900. A tragic event by all accounts, the story is online etc but basically he got lost when separated from his father and older cousin when visiting his grandfather's farm down in the cwm below and instead of calling out / keeping to the path / staying in fields at lower altitude he mysteriously made his way upwards, covering some 2km of ground and rising some 300 metres in altitude, in the gathering dark, to this spot where presumably he was overcome with dehydration, cold and exhaustion and his young life was lost.

A search began within minutes of his becoming separated but his grandfather, father, cousin and some soldiers all missed him. To add to the mystery his body was found 29 days later by a woman who purported to having had a dream or vision of where he was to be found, she shared this and was proved to be a true visionary.

In the intervening 29 days the army, local police and farm workers all searched ceaselessly, day and night in the case of his father I believe, and all avenues were pursued, with local gypsies being accused of kidnap, fist-fights between suspects and accusers and all-round high emotion.

To add even further to the mystery in April 1902 another 5 year old boy called Willy Llewellyn was lost and found dead 14 days later high up on Rhigos Mountain.

Were the faeries or Tylwyth Teg responsible? I doubt it - five year old boys want to wander and aren't yet equipped for it. Even in August the temperatures up here can fall to low levels and this tragedy was the combination of bad luck, bad timing and bad practice. Today this memorial serves to remind walkers that these mountains must be treated with the utmost respect.

Here's to you little Tommy.
