The Church of the Immaculate Conception, Broadbottom
The Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception is in a rural setting on the banks of the river Etherow, below the village of Broadbottom. It was built during 1895-6 in a simple Gothic style on land acquired from Lord Howard of Glossop. It opened in 1896, serving the tiny hamlet of New York (which is still its address) and nearby Charlesworth and Broadbottom.
This is a view of the west end of the church (which faces the road) with the gabled bellcote above a niche with a statue of Our Lady. Also in the photograph is the statue of the Sacred Heart mounted on a rockery plinth. Both the church and the statue are local landmarks.
