Hidcote Manor is a former farmhouse much altered in the early 20th century under the direction of Mrs Gertrude Winthrop and her son Major Lawrence Johnston who purchased the property in 1907. Listed Grade II Linkthe manor is situated in Gloucestershire near the borders with Warwickshire and Oxfordshire. Major Johnston was born in France to American parents but became a naturalised British citizen and joined the British Army seeing service in the second Boer War and the Great War. Although severely wounded in the latter conflict he survived to the age of 87. He died in France in 1958. Although the house is of interest the main feature to attract visitors is the garden, or series of gardens, around the house. Lawrence was largely responsible for the design, layout and planting of the gardens which were a labour of love that lasted for the forty years from 1907 to 1947 when he bequeathed the estate to the National Trust in whose hands it remains Link
