Samuel Speare memorial window, Rickinghall Superior
In 1896 the window was installed in St Mary's, Rickinghall Superior, to commemorate the life of Samuel Speare who was born into one of the poorest Rickinghall families. Samuel became the protégé of Bishop William Tozer (1829–1899) and spent five years as a missionary in Zanzibar. He returned to England in the summer of 1873, aged 20, and after a brief visit to Rickinghall went to Burgh Le Marsh, Lincolnshire to assist in parish work and prepare for ordination. He died from inflamation of the lungs on 11 November 1873. His mother was at his bedside. The biography of Sam Speare entitled "A Suffolk Boy in East Africa" has been republished by a local voluntary group and is available from LinkExternal link
