Garden at Haddon Hall - 1
The terraced gardens were laid out by John Manvers and Dorothy Vernon under the Long Gallery (in the background), where they could be easily viewed from the showpiece windows. Originally it was probably a knot garden, which was very much in-vogue in Elizabethan times. Records suggest that the garden was laid out in 1582 by architect Robert Smythson, who had designed the gardens for family friend Lady Willoughby at Wollaton Hall (see SK5339 : Wollaton Hall ).
