Isleham Priory Church
Isleham Priory Church
Isleham Priory was an English outstation of an abbey in Normandy. Its church, built in about 1090, is perhaps the best surviving example of a small Benedictine church in Great Britain. 'Alien priories' supported the monasteries in France that controlled them, and when England went to war with France, many were seized by the Crown. Isleham was suppressed in 1414 and given to Pembroke College in Cambridge who converted the church to a barn, but demolished the other monastic buildings. It remained a barn until 1944.
