Veteran trees near Monkton Farm
This was my first visit to this spot - and knowing nothing of the medieval village site nearby - I was intrigued by the odd assortment of trees growing in a narrow belt along this ridge. In the foreground are two field maples (Acer campestris) and, between them, the stump of a third. The species is less widespread than the name might suggest, and I don't know it well enough to say whether these were once pollarded. Behind the camera were some mature ash trees, and what looked to me like the fallen trunks of hornbeams. Scattered among and around the species I've mentioned are coppice stools - some of which can be seen in the photo.

So far I have been able to discover very little about the abandoned village site, other than what is available here on Geograph: Link Link
