Inscription celebrating the marriage of Edward Jenner
Inscription celebrating the marriage of Edward Jenner
Inscription in the porch of Kingscote church celebrating the marriage of Edward Jenner and Catherine Kingscote on 6th March 1788. They originally met three and a half years early in September 1784 when Edward Jenner undertook a pioneering hydrogen balloon flight. Taking off from Berkeley Castle the balloon floated eastwards and landed on Kingscote Estate, frightening the locals who were reaping in the fields but obviously impressing Catherine. From Kingscote, Jenner took to the skies once more and drifted northwards and is thought to have landed near Birdlip Hill near what is known today as the Air Balloon public house.
