Crossness Pumping Station - preserved engine detail
Crossness Pumping Station - preserved engine detail
One of Bazalgette's wondrous pumping stations to deal with London's sewage, Crossness houses four beam engine built in 1865 by James Watt & Co. In 1899 they were completely rebuilt and converted from single cylinder to triple expansion by Benjamin Goodfellow of Hyde. Finally retired in 1953 they were left derelict and became much deteriorated. It took 18 years or so to bring this engine back into steam.

This is the high pressure cylinder and is below the intermediate pressure and shares its piston rod. It has Corliss valve gear and the governor to adjust cut-off is hidden behind the cylinder to the left. In common with many beam engines, there is as much interesting plant below the driving floor level as there is above it. The public are allowed below this engine and follow a defined route that keeps them away from harm.
