Crossness Pumping Station - beam engine detail
This pumping station houses four very large beam pumping engines built in 1865 by James Watt & Co as single cylinder engines and later converted to triple expansion in 1899. It took 18 years to reverse 40 years of dereliction and bring this one back to steam.
The red device bottom left is the surface condenser that has been gutted and now houses a modern equivalent. The red vertical pump was the circulating pump and hidden to the right is the air pump and feed pump assembly.
