Traigh Bhan, Islay
The memorial commemorates those who were lost during the shipwreck of the Exmouth in 1847. The ship was lost during a storm while en route from Londonderry to Quebec. There were about 240 people emigrating to Canada on board and eleven crew. Many of the passengers were women and children travelling to join their husbands and fathers who had already settled in Canada. The report of the wreck suggests that the ship may have been a hundred miles from where the captain thought it was. The only survivors were three of the crew.
