The Anglesey Arms Hotel
The Anglesey Arms Hotel
Prior to 1822, when it was converted into an inn, this building was the Customs House. It is now the only house still attached to the town wall. The Anglesey is a very popular watering place, particularly on summer evenings, when patrons sit out on the promenade wall watching the sun go down. On winter nights, it is a different story. The inn is reputed to be the most haunted building in Caernarfon and the tales of strange goings on are numerous. One reason put forward for this is its proximity to the Hanging Tower (extreme left of the picture). The last man to be hung there was William Murphy in 1911. On that occasion the clapper of the execution bell of St Mary's Church fell off at exactly 8 a.m. LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) The building on the right (which is on sale) was the old Caernarfonshire Police Headquarters and was built in 1853.
