Common Lizard (Lacerta vivipara), Rainham Marshes
Common Lizard (Lacerta vivipara), Rainham Marshes
Seen on a boardwalk on the RSPB reserve. It's not often that a lizard tolerates a close approach, so I count myself lucky to have bagged this shot.

This species has evolved the ability to discard its tail when threatened by a predator. I have never seen this happen, but it is said that the tail continues to wriggle around, distracting the predator from the larger target. In this picture, there is a definite waisting at the base of the lizard's tail - evidence that the tail has re-grown, following some 'near squeak'.

Likely predators might include crow, fox, stoat, weasel and grass snake; in Richmond Park I have seen lizards taken both by kestrels and by little owls.
