Rother railway walk to Hardham
Rother railway walk to Hardham
The gate gives access from Kings Lane onto the disused railway formation leading to Hardham. Access is permitted along the disused railway under a Countryside Stewardship scheme which ends in September 2014: LinkExternal link (the older sign, mounted above the newer one, to the left of the gate, records that access was previously secured under an agreement first made by the Countryside Commission). The permissive path continues as far as public footpath 2426, which briefly follows the formation just north of Hardham Priory. See TQ0117 : Start of the Permissive path along the former Midhurst to Pulborough Railway for the same view just beyond the gate.
Kings Lane, Coldwaltham :: TQ0217
Kings Lane begins in Coldwaltham on the London Road, and deteriorates to an unsurfaced track at Fulbrook. About half-way beyond Fulbrook to the disused Rother Valley railway line, the lane becomes narrower and (perhaps because the ditches have been left unmaintained) coincident with a stream in wet weather. Just before reaching the railway line is another green lane, heading south to Waltham Park Road. The status of Kings Lane (east of the railway line, as far as Fulbrook) is not apparent from the map, but the finger post records that it is a 'public way', suggesting that it is an unsealed public road. Beyond the railway line, Kings Lane continues north-west, initially as a public footpath, and then north-east, now of uncertain status, to serve the water meadows on the south side of a loop of the River Rother.
