Dun an Rubha Bhudie, Islay
The land-facing side of this Iron Age fort is protected by three walls. The innermost wall contains traces of vitrified rock, meaning that at some point it has been exposed to an extremely high temperature. In the past it was thought that this phenomenon in forts such as this was evidence of a construction method used to strengthen the defences. Now it is more commonly believed that the fire would have been the result of an attack or accident.
