Wylam Bridge
On the wall of the station building nearby is a plaque to Benjamin Thompson, Engineer and Ironmaster (1779-1867). In 1825 he became a director of the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway Company and surveyed the route for the line. He supervised the later stages of its construction between 1833 and 1835. In this year, he also founded the Wylam Ironworks where locomotives were built and was responsible, in 1836, for the erection of Wylam Bridge, which linked his Ironworks and the village, to the new railway.
