Dew Pond
Dew Pond
This small round pond sited in a hollow is made by digging a pit and lining with clay. They are found in dry, hilly places where there are no streams or springs such as this one on the South Downs. Here the underlying bedrock is porous chalk so that water simply drains away underground. At the time this photo was taken Southern water had just imposed a hose pipe ban due to lack of rainfall - as indicated by this empty dew pond.
