Looking towards the main dressing floor of Hafod y Porth Copper Mine
The first mention of Hafod y Porth copper mine, on the side of Yr Aran above Nant Gwynant, dates back to 1755. It was never very profitable, with as little as 58 tons of dressed ore being produced during its lifetime of over 100 years. In short succession, after 1860, it was owned by 5 different companies each raising money from duped investors and speculators.
This view up-slope shows the floor of the lower dressing floor now colonised by heather, the ruins of the stamps (or ore crusher) and the retaining wall of the upper dressing floor. The stamps were worked by water power and in an 1845 sale catalogue were described as an 8-head stamp battery.
